More about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

A hands-on approach to experiencing the mystery of God’s love

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a unique process for children 3-12 years of age, founded in Sacred Scripture and the Liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. It is based on the teaching principles of Maria Montessori’s work with children and was developed in the 1950s in Rome. The founders of this approach, Sophia Cavalletti – a scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobbi – a Montessori teacher, discovered that God and the child have a unique relationship particularly before the age of six, and their observations show that the most profound mysteries should be shared with the youngest children.

The CGS “program or way” occurs in an atrium. It is a place for prayer, religious life, community, and worship. It is not a classroom for instruction. This atrium space is where meaningful work takes place – where, with the aid of hand-made materials, the child ponders the mysteries of God proclaimed by the catechist.
